League Round Up: 10th February

By Lincs League

THERE were important wins for the top two of the Balcan Lighting Supplies Lincolnshire League during the latest round of matches.

Leaders Ruston Sports came back from behind to beat neighbours Nettleham in a match that was switched to their Newark Road, Lincoln ground.

And Horncastle Town hit title rivals Grimsby Borough Academy for six on the 3G pitch at Bradley.

Skegness Town got back to winnings ways with a convincing victory over Louth Town, while Immingham Town smacked five past team of the month Sleaford Sports Amateurs at Eslaforde Park.

The local derby between Wyberton and AFC Boston was postponed following the resignation from the league of the Boston side.

Grimsby Borough Academy 1 Horncastle Town 6

This fixture was switched to the 3G pitch at Bradley, a surface that proved to be to the liking of the visitors.

There was a brace of goals apiece for Horncastle’s Luke Blondel and Michael Harness, one for Andrew Bullivant and a great solo effort from teenager Jack Wood.

On target for the Grimsby side was Harry Burke.

Ruston Sports 5 Nettleham 3

Trailing 2-1 at the interval, Ruston Sports grabbed the initiative early in the second half to turn the game on its head.

Jake Read’s long range effort had cancelled out the opener from Nettleham’s Adam Croft, but skipper Alvin Nurse had restored the Nettles’ lead with a headed finish.

That was how it stood at the break, but ten minutes into the second half it all looked very different.

Two mistimed challenges in the penalty area presented Callum Dye with spot kicks, both of which he duly converted.

Alex Mackinder then sprung the offside trap to make it 4-2 with a neat finish.

Jack Higginson got Nettleham back in it when he swivelled on the edge of the box to fire into the far corner.

But Mackinder secured the points with his second of the afternoon from close range late in the game.

Skegness Town 5 Louth Town 1

A Will Britton hat-trick helped Skegness Town get back to winning ways at The Vertigo Stadium.

Britton’s treble, his first for the seasiders this season, was backed up by a brace from Jordan Smith.

The Lilywhites led 2-0 at half time, but a goal from former Skegness player Chris Ella, halved Louth’s deficit early in the second half.

The visitors competed well throughout the game and can be forgiven for feeling that the final scoreline did not reflect the effort they put in.

But they found the home side in ruthless mood in front of goal.

Sleaford Sports Amateurs 0 Immingham Town 5

Before the kick-off Sleaford Sports Amateurs were presented with their team of the month award for their relatively fruitful December and January.

But the Pilgrims from Immingham spoilt the party by hitting five goals without reply - their second consecutive clean sheet, which lifted them to third in the table.

Ben Cooke gave them the lead in the 15th minute when he converted from the penalty spot.

The visitors doubled their advantage in the 28th minute with a goal from Liam Vanderweele.

Ten minutes into the second half a Carl Price strike from 20 yards found the top corner.

The Pilgrims added a fourth though John Waugh in the 75th minute and late in the game Waugh headed home his second to wrap things up.
